Civic Engagement

Tubman organizers work with communities on voter registration drives and candidate forums.

Voter Registration

Working with its affiliated organizations, Tubman conducted a voter registration and get out the vote effort in 2010. Targeting low income youth and parents in Latino and African American communities in Southwest Detroit Tubman worked with schools, agencies and other community based organizations to expand voter engagement in disadvantaged communities.

Tubman affiliate organization, Detroit Action Commonwealth, registered over 600 voters in November of 2010, and continues to register an average of 30 individuals a month.

Support From the Courts

Southwest Solutions hosted a forum with candidates running for judge as part of their Civic Engagement Project.  The judges met with over 85 Southwest Solutions clients and staff. Civic Engagement Project leaders directed questions to candidates regarding court related issues members in the community face.  Judges agreed to come back in June of 2011 and work with the community on efforts to establish a local community court in Southwest Detroit. Judges also agreed to support Youth Voice efforts to bring vital ceasefire youth violence prevention lifelines to Detroit.
