School Based Organizing

School Based organizing is centered around empowering parents to take initiative on the social problems around the schools where their children learn. Crime, Abandoned Houses and Stray dogs all are topics of social concern and it is amazing to see all of these parents becoming leaders in their community taking action!

Parents & Neighborhood Members Hold a Community

Action Meeting with Commander John Serda

Parents and neighborhood members held a community action meeting at O.W. Holmes Elementary and Middle School on December 4, 2009 to dialogue with police on safety and security concerns that they have, and to demand that they be addressed.  The action had an estimated 95 community members in attendance, and Commander John Serda, Southwestern District Commander for the Detroit Police Department, was given an opportunity to describe some of the community policing procedures that the department has instituted in the district.  Then, community members gave a letter to Commander Serda that detailed specific and general neighborhood crime concerns.  Finally, the community action meeting was opened to the public where they were able to voice their concerns directly to the police commander.  For more pictures Click here!
