Tubman affiliates Our Kids Come First, YOUTH VOICE, and the Detroit Educators Network have brought a coalition of parents, youth, educators, community and faith leaders together for a campaign to ensure that teaching and staffing assignments in Detroit Public Schools are completed by August 1st, the first day of school.
In the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year, many Detroit Public Classrooms were without certified teachers trained in that subject. Students sat in auditoriums. Substitutes switched in and out, and students suffered.
The coalition believes that Detroit students deserve stability in the classroom, and the right to start learning from Day One. Roy Roberts, the new Financial Manager of Detroit Public Schools, has this opportunity to ensure that classrooms are ready for students on the first day of school. The students are ready to learn, and classrooms should be ready to give Detroit students the tools they need to succeed!
