There are nearly 10,000 English Language Learners in the Detroit Public Schools and thousands more monolingual parents. These parents struggle to monitor and participate in their children’s education when there is a language barrier between them and the schools. Currently, many schools lack sufficient staff to meet the needs of bilingual families. Therefore, we demands that every school with more than 20 bilingual students, including Cass Technical High School, will have access to resources to speak to monolingual parents and to reproduce written communication from the school in that secondary language.
