Internships

Our goal at the Harriet Tubman Center is to support the development of community organizers and help them attain full time organizing positions across the country. We offer paid full and part-time internships lasting three to six months depending on the organizer and the project.

Eligibility: Individuals of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to apply.

Application Process: To apply for a Harriet Tubman Center Internship please submit the following:

  2. Cover Letter and Resume
  3. 2-3 References (please provide both the phone and email contact information)

Deadlines: Internships are awarded on a rolling and ongoing basis.

Intern Organizers will develop the skills to:

  • Build trusting relationships with community members
  • Strengthen networks between organizations
  • Identify and support potential leadership
  • Engage faith or organization leaders in issues of social justice
  • Coordinate public actions that will build the power of the community in which the intern is placed
  • Understand the theory and practice of community organizing, the roles and practices of a variety of institutions and the methods of community development
  • Build strategic and supportive relationships with other community organizers

Successful Interns:

  • Have a passionate commitment to social justice and equality
  • Have the ability to communicate successfully with individuals of diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Are self-driven
  • Have a passion for continuous growth and learning
  • Have a sense of humor

Support for Organizers:

Intern organizers will be in daily contact with the Director of the Harriet Tubman Center or members of the Advisory Board. The Director, Advisory Board and Affiliated Organizers will provide training, guidance and career mentorship. Intern Organizers will also be in weekly contact with other Interns and Organizers in order to share strategies and experiences. Our system helps avoid organizer burn out.
