DETROIT, MI — Nearly 150 students and others are expected to march from Detroit to Lansing beginning Monday.
The goal of the demonstration planned by Youth Voice is to bring attention to school disciplinary policy they believe is counterproductive, such as expulsion and suspension for petty rule breaking.
The relay-style, two-day, 80-mile march begins at 9 a.m. Monday after a rally at the intersection of Lahser and Grand River in Detroit.
Youth Voice lists the following as its goals:
- Modify zero tolerance to reserve 180-day expulsions for serious offenses
- Stop unjust suspensions for truancy and uniform violations
- Support schools to create an alternative to suspensions
- Provide behavioral assessment for youth with needs
Youth Voice held a similar demonstration in Detroit last year. More here.
